Congratulations! Once you have finished your course of treatment and achieved your orthodontic goals, your braces will be removed. When we remove your braces, you will begin what is known as the retention phase. You will receive special retainers and be given instructions on their wear and care. The wear of these retainers will help retain the beautiful and healthy smile you have worked so hard for!

Types of Retainers

MJO offers clear, removable retainers following the removal of your braces. One set will be provided which is included in the cost of your treatment.

Another type of retainer is a wrap-around removable retainer also known as a Hawley retainer. If the patient prefers this type of retainer there will be no additional charge as long as MJO is aware of your preference at the time your appliances are removed. If it is requested at a later date, the lab cost will be passed onto the patient.

We also have patients the prefer a “fixed retainer”. This type of retainer consists of a small passive wire being bonded to the inside of the incisors. Not everyone is a good candidate for this type of retainer and Dr. Matt will evaluate this prior to placing.

You will be provided with a special case for your removable retainers. We highly recommend keeping your retainer in its case when it is not being worn. To clean these retainers, you may brush them by using toothpaste and cold water. Your retainer should also be removed when participating in a sporting activity that requires a mouth guard or while swimming. We also recommend the retainers and their cases be kept out of the heat to prevent distortion or warping. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far!
